The first to stop wearing traditional costumes in Zeeland were the "ordinary" citizens. Many farmers continued to wear them, however, and this is where the saying "people dressed in a farmer's way" comes from. Farmers who decided to stop wearing traditional costumes also started wearing them "in a citizen's way." With her project "As a Farmer," Naomi Remijn showcases traditional Zeeland costumes in contemporary products.
AS A FARMER
COLLECTION 0118
In the Zeeland costume of Walcheren, smocking was often applied around the neck. The women who wore this costume wore nothing but this garment and therefore wore a (often) self-smocked beukje (the beukje is the part of the Walcheren costume that covers the bust) every day. This handiwork gives the clothing its special value. In my artwork, this technique is highlighted by greatly enlarging details.
